De Houttuin is het centrale plein van Hillegom. Officieel heet dit plein het Kerkplein, maar al eeuwenlang wordt dit de Houttuin genoemd.

The Houttuin is the central square of Hillegom. Officially this square is called Kerkplein, but for centuries it is called Houttuin. At the Houttuin you can still see some nice old buildings which have survived the ravages of time, such as the Schoutenhuis and the Klokgeveltje.

In the middle of the Houttuin, since 1740, the Grote Pomp (Big Pump) has been on display. This pump was donated to the people of Hillegom by Jan Six II, lord of Hillegom. Until the introduction of the waterworks in 1926 this pump has served its purpose.
Also on De Houttuin the Wilhelminaboom, a tree from 1898 with the fence reconstructed in 1998.

The inn "Het Wapen van Friesland" stood on the site of the new building until 1978. In this medieval inn, the ANWB was founded in 1881 and it was from here that the first steps were taken to dig the Ringvaart of the Haarlemmermeer. In 1978, this national monument was burnt to the ground by arson.
