Walking in Keukenhof Forest

Do you want to escape the hustle and bustle for a while?

Keukenhof Forest is a lovely place for a nice walk. The woods used to be part of the Keukenhof estate. Now you can take a lovely walk along leafy paths and lanes. Be sure to look up. In the old trees, long-eared owls can be found napping between the branches during the day.

It is lovely to walk through the beautiful old forest with large, thick trees in the middle of the bulb fields. Keukenhof Forest is a varied and hilly forest area with beech, oak and coniferous trees. Woodpeckers, owls  and pigeons nest in the hollows of the trees. In spring, grey herons make large nests in the tops of the pines.

A taste of history

In the woods where you can now take a lovely walk, you can still 'taste' history. In the Middle Ages, game was hunted for the kitchen of Teylingen Castle in the wide stretch of inland dunes called Keukenduyn. Besides hunting game, people also got their fruit and vegetables from here. This is where Jacoba van Beieren lived the last four years of her life in exile. The name Keukenduyn at the time was later used for the name of the estate: Keukenhof.
