The “Heemtuin” in Lisse is a Heemtuin of the wild plantgardens type.

In 1990, a group of volunteerd took the initiative to manage an area near the “Zemelpoldermolen” as a Heemtuin. Twenty years before, there was a Heemtuin at the same place, managed by the K.M.T.P. Lisse, but it was not used anymore. A new division was made. Deferred maintenance was done and paths were made. After a few years of preparation, the Heemtuin was officially opened by Mr. H.N.T. Koster in 1994. At that time, he was the director of the Keukenhof. As well, the educational activities started. The Heemtuin grow from an idea of volunteers to a place of nature enjoyment for everyone.
