In the middle of the open meadow in front of the Oostergeest country house stands a wooden stork's nest. The black and white birds with their fierce beaks embellish the villagescape and are probably bringers of luck and new life in Warmond.

It is not clear how old exactly the stork's nest on the meadow near Buitenhuis Oostergeest is. In any case, it can be found on photos taken before the turn of the century in 1900.

Storks must have nested there regularly until 1935. In that year old Mrs Leemans died. She had a saying that if she died, there would be no more storks. The storks disappeared that year and the nest fell into disrepair. The myth does not tell us that carpenter Balkenende also died in that same year. He made sure every year that the nest was ready for the next breeding season. Ladies of the carnival society, dressed up as stork, managed to raise money for a new nest in 1988.

It was not until 1994 that a real nest was built and a young was born. Since then, the storks have returned every year to breed. The nest is inhabited by a permanent pair of storks, the young fly out and have to find a new home.
