“People create society themselves — so they can also change it themselves.”
Mahagonny is a city where everything revolves around money and pleasure. It looks like paradise, but the darker side soon appears. What happens when people live only for enjoyment, without rules or care for one another?
This music theatre production by Aan Zee Theaterproducties combines the sharp social critique of Bertolt Brecht with the powerful music of Kurt Weill. A story that remains strikingly relevant today. Expect a performance full of energy, humour and tension — for lovers of theatre, music and stories that resonate.

Pre-show: Oscar Wibaut
The pre-show is hosted by Oscar Wibaut, former director of the Royal Theatre (Koninklijke Schouwburg) in The Hague. He will guide you through Brecht’s epic theatre principles, his collaboration with Kurt Weill, and the historical context in which the work was created — the perfect lead-in to an evening of satire, music and sharp reflections.
Oscar Wibaut has worked in the cultural sector for nearly 35 years, as a programmer and director at the Royal Theatre in The Hague and as general director of Toneelgroep Maastricht. When Oscar Wibaut speaks, you don’t just hear an engaging storyteller — you hear someone who knows theatre from the inside out. With a keen eye for repertoire, performance and social context, he bridges theatre history and today’s questions with ease.
Tip: Would you like to attend the pre-show as well? An additional ticket is available in the ticket shop.
